Disclaimer: I was provided  2 gift bags (1 to giveaway and 1 for myself). As always, all opinions are my own.

While you’re reading this I’m probably just about landing in Costa Rica for our honeymoon. Since I’m sure you’re begging me too, I’ll have a drink (or three) in your honor. What can I say – I’m pretty generous. ;)

I tend to try to keep things on the blog here upbeat, informative and definitely shy away from more serious topics. Not to say that I don’t have serious stuff going on but because I think we all get inundated with so much serious, bad stuff that it’s nice to have a place where that stuff isn’t all up in your face.

But sometimes there are things that I believe in that I think there should be awareness about. I was recently contacted by Run 10 Feed 10. It’s a race series hosted by Women’s Health that proceeds go towards feeding people in the metropolitan area of the race you run. Immediately I was on board to help with spreading the word, even though I’m unable to participate in the race.

I’ve known hunger was a problem for a long time. I see it everyday walking the streets of San Francisco to my office. While I see examples of this every day I had no idea that the number of people in this country going hungry. Nearly 50 million people don’t where their next meal will come from. 50 million! I struggle to wrap my head around how that is even possible. With the amount of food we grow, produce and sell in this country how is that possible?

I’ve been very fortunate in my life in the sense that I’ve never had to experience true hunger or be worried if I would have another meal. But I’ve also always been aware that others are not as fortunate. I’ve always tried to give back as much as possible, whether that is giving someone some spare change, buying someone a meal, giving one of the snacks I keep in my purse to someone, etc. It’s a simple gesture that means the difference to people who have fallen on bad times.

While I can’t participate in this race since I will be out of the country I encourage all of you to participate if you can. Donate if you can. Take a look through your cabinet and if you can’t get through all those cans of beans you bought on sale, donate them. Stopping hunger is one of the world’s largest problems that is actually fixable.

While Run 10 Feed 10 has generously donated a goodie bag to one lucky reader I hope that this post opened everyone’s eyes a bit to the huge problem that I think it fixable. For more information on this serious issue, please visit Feeding America to find out how you can help. If you have a race in your town please sign up and feed 10 people.
